Osney Cemetery tree-planting project – help choose tree types and planting locations

Osney Cemetery, now disused, is a large green space in Mill Street, very close to the City Centre. Susanna Pressel aims to make this area more attractive to wildlife by planting more native trees. Money and resources for heavy work are likely to be available.

Planting proposals so far for Osney Cemetery :

• Two oaks where the chapel used to be, and two more further down
• Two female hollies, buddleias, berberis, cotoneasters (perhaps in the central area)
• Mixed wild hedge along the western perimete – consisting for example of hawthorns, viburnums, dog-roses
• Butterfly corner by the lych-gate, with wild flowers, hay-meadow flowers, buddleias etc (perhaps treated as a separate project)
• Fencing and filling the gaps in the hedge at the southern perimeter

Other proposals so far :

• Provide seating
• Put a hoggin path down the middle and/or round the edge
• Put the interpretation board back
• Leave areas of grass undisturbed – some over the winters, some over the summers, and some at the edges all year round
• Remove one of the enormous conifers near the entrance
