Shaping the Future
There are significant further improvements that could be made. 20mph on the main road has widespread support locally, but presents significant policy issues for the County Council. Additional crossings of the river and/or railway would be very expensive (though there are some developer contributions that might be used). So these ideas remain only aspirations in the short term, and included mostly for discussion.
20mph Botley Road
- 20mph zone on the "urban" sections of Botley Road, in particular from Binsey Lane to Ferry Hinksey Road and from Osney Bridge to St Frideswide Square. Ideally 20mph from Binsey Lane to the City Centre.
River / Railway Crossings
The river and the railway form barriers between West Oxford and the rest of the City. There are a number of places where they could be crossed, with different advantages and disadvantages. Very few will ever be affordable, but we could usefully as a community discuss which would be the best. Here are some of the ideas:
- Subway under the railway on the north side, to divert the pavement and give room for a cycle lane on the road.
- Pedestrian (& cycle) bridge over the river from North St to outside River Hotel
- Additional wide subway under the railway on the south side of Botley Road (using the old road alignment). This would allow the existing subway to be converted for cycle use, giving enough room for an inbound cycle lane under the bridge.
- Bridge with ramps over the river at Russell St (halfway along Mill St)
- Pedestrian bridge (with steps) over the river from Barratt St to South St
- Replace the pedestrian bridge over the railway at Osney Lane with ramped bridge or subway
- Level route through Marina and across the foot of the lock
- New bridge over the river south of the railway bridge over the river linking to Oxpens
