Encouragement & Policy
Instead or as well as small changes to local roads and paths, there are many ways that Low Carbon transport could be promoted in West Oxford. Here are some of the ideas (in roughly ascending order of radicalism).
- Bikeability (replaces Cycle Proficiency). Needs to be investigated to see if it will apply to local schools. Cycle training for adults should also be investigated.
- Safer Ways to school – assessment of bike route to Matthew Arnold school.
- Set-up cycling buddy scheme
- Set-up cycle pool scheme
- Find out green transport plans for local businesses. Especially for Osney Mead and businesses at southern end of Mill Street.
- Ban lorries between certain hours
- Invest more widely in Seacourt park and ride
- Give rewards for parking out of town local businesses. Especially for Osney Mead and businesses at southern end of Mill Street.
- Have extended ‘Life begins at 20’ day in 2008 (last year Mill Street was the only West Oxford street to participate).
- Hold event to raise awareness of problems with cyclists traveling through red lights at pedestrian crossings (perhaps with parents, children, Cyclox representatives and police officers in attendance).
- Promote a car free event at some point in the future?
- Provide free bicycles
- Provide free umbrellas
- Only local residents allowed to drive into town during day
- Introduce West Oxford congestion charge or toll
