Maybe Difficult; Need Discussion
These are significant problems, but will need quite a bit of discussion to find an acceptable solution
Make it easier to cross Botley Road
- Review crossings on wide sections of the road with a view to narrowing (making them quicker to cross, with a shorter red time for cars/buses). Experiment with using the width of the bus lane at Bridge St (which doesn’t give significant advantage to buses) to provide traffic islands for the bus stops and for the crossing (with cyclists going behind the islands).
Make it easier to cycle along Botley Road
- Close Cripley Road junction. There are too many side junctions in a short stretch, generating accident risks for cyclists. Move the pedestrian crossing to between Mill St and Roger Dudman Way. Remove the pavement under the railway bridge and install cycle lane instead.
- Move the bus shelter opposite Bridge St closer to the road and create a cycle track behind the bus stop (the remaining pavement wouldn’t be generous, so this needs discussion, and much the same result could be achieved by putting the bus stop on a traffic island – see above).
Manage the traffic better & speed up the buses
- Use the bus gate at Binsey Lane to hold back the traffic a bit more
- Ban right turns in the evening peak from the ramp down from the A34 roundabout into Botley (traffic can divert via North Hinksey Lane)
- Ban right turns into the Wickes access on Sunday afternoons (alternative access is now available via Lamarsh Road).
