Make it easier to walk along Botley Road (Middle)
Ferry Hinksey Road is difficult to cross, and hardly anyone diverts to use the pedestrian crossing. Instead pedestrians switch sides of Botley Road two or even three times when walking along it, holding up traffic each time they cross. The mouth of Binsey Lane is similarly problematical. Further out there are fewer pedestrians, but the pavement outside the self-storage depot is notably narrow.
- Install a pedestrian crossing across Ferry Hinksey Road junction (two phases to cross, with an island; very little traffic turns right post-OTS, so the two approach lanes aren’t necessary, and capacity would be improved by making the left turn less sharp). Remove the crossing 50m up Ferry Hinksey Road.
- Reduce the width of the mouth of Binsey Lane (to 6m), and tighten radii (to 2m)
- Widen the pavement outside the self-storage depot. The bay does not need to be that deep or long. Buses don’t pull into the kerb, so you have to step into the gutter, and buses do not stop for long, so the congestion effect would be minimal
