There are a good number of pedestrian crossings on Botley Road, but a fair number of pedestrians crossing on red, and non-compliance by cyclists. It is always a balance between delaying the pedestrian and delaying the traffic, but in congested conditions, the ideal crossing is probably one that changes straight away, and is on a narrow part of the road so that it stays red for as short a time as possible. It is noticeable that crossings don’t change straight away when traffic is crawling, even though that has no traffic benefits.
