Worried about
landfill?
Don't know what to do with your garden waste?
Got something to say about rubbish?
Got a use for stuff that other people throw away?
WOWW (West Oxford Waste Watchers) formed in the spring 2004
with much interest from local residents. The group has strong links with West
Oxford Community Centre (WOCA) and (OSIG.)
Summary of achievements since our 2004 startup :
- Plastic waste recycling bin in place at
Ferry Hinksey Road
- Warlands Cycle shop now has a bin for collection
of used batteries
- Organic cotton shopping bags supplied to
local shops for sale at less than cost price
- Regular Bring & Take junk swaps
- Regular West Oxford litter-picks
- Working with Eco Warriors at West Oxford Community
Primary School, eg recycling aluminium cans
- Meetings with invited speakers on such
topics as the City Council's refuse and recycling proposals and sourcing local
food for Oxfordshire.
- Stalls at the West Oxford Fun Day, school's
Eco Festival, West Oxford Community Association AGM
- Lobbying council on recycling and waste
collection
- Feasibility of green waste shredding investigated
- Explored the idea of producing an A-Z of recycling
for West Oxford
Local action can have quick results -- at the first open
meeting the issue was raised of no plastic being accepted by the kerbside recycling
scheme. Now, thanks to the City Council and WOWW CAG, West Oxford residents
can recycle plastic bottles locally in Ferry Hinksey
Road.
